Work, Work, Work

Work, Work, Work

IMG_5169I did two back-to-back two hour massages Saturday, which capped off my work week sinking into exhaustion.  Yet, I somewhat foolishly decided to follow-through on my plan to attend the Capitol City Squares’ Harvest Moon and 28th Anniversary Dance in Sacramento.  Steve picked me and new dancer, Jason, up and off we schlepped to Sacramento.

We arrived 30 minutes into the dance, and I only danced four tips that evening, but they were good.  I danced two Plus tips, one Class-level tip, and the one A2 tip they had.  The calling was brisk and just challenging enough, although I was truly wiped out by the end of the night, and sat out most of dancing to marshal my energy for that A2 tip.

After the dance, we all piled back into Steve’s car and we made it back to San Francisco by 23:30, even with the lane closures on the Bay Bridge.

Sunday, I walked to the Lone Star Saloon, and drank some beer at the bust for the South Bay Bears.  Chatted with folks I hadn’t seen in a while, especially Will and Bruin.  Sometime about half-way into the bust, Will decided that he had had enough crowd, so he and Bruin left.

IMG_5170As I was standing there talking to this crazy guy who thought silk came from flies, and wool from “farm animals,” I decided to excuse myself and leave with them.  We walked up to Market Street, then further all the way to the Castro, where we made our farewells.  I could feel my back complaining so went over to Thai Chef and gratefully sat down.  During the walk, a young man with whom I had been chatting on bear411 called and asked where we could meet.  I let him know that I was going to be dining at Thai Chef, and that he was free to join me if he wanted.

IMG_5175He arrived not long after I sat down, and we had a nice conversation about nothing in particular.  After supper, we wandered around the Castro windowshopping, and I gave him a couple of smooches in front of Urban Florist as the purple-colored  phalaenopsis peered back at us through the glass.  I was definitely showing signs of having a sore back, though, and he graciously offered to give me a ride home.  Once upstairs, I shed my clothes, checked email, and climbed up into my bed.  Sleep came quickly, and deeply.

Twink Hugs and Surly Drunks

Twink Hugs and Surly Drunks

Saturday I headed to my office to see a new client, hopped on the bus like normal, but when I got to 8th and Market, I realized that I had forgotten to grab the bag of clean sheets!   I got off the bus and crossed the street to the bus in the outbound direction.

It was around quarter to noon, so I called my client to let him know that I was going to be around 15 minutes late.  Just as I was about to tell him, he blurted out that he was going to be late, so I asked him how late he thought he was going to be.  His reply?  “Oh, around 45 minutes.”

45 minutes late to an hour long appointment.  When I told him that we wouldn’t be able to work unless he wanted to come in a little later in the afternoon, he demurred, and asked if we could reschedule for later in the week.

So, I didn’t have to tell him that I was going to be 15 minutes late after all!  Instead I am going to reschedule with him for a session this week.

OK, well, with my schedule disrupted unexpectedly, I came back home and did a load of laundry.

But backtracking a bit, while I was waiting at the bus stop to head downtown, I called my friend, Pete King, and he asked me if I’d come up to Guerneville to and be a security guy for a dance at his club, Riverspace, for a dance at the circuit party, Sundance.  Somehow I agreed to this.

So, Sunday I got a zipcar and drove up to the river.  We had dinner at Boon, the new cafe where Bob and Boy used to be, and it was delightful!  I had the radicchio salad with carmelized pears, and Pete had the cous-cous with a chicken breast, which also looked tasty!

The party ran from 6pm to 3am.  Egads, standing in front of the club while hundreds of young (and not so young), ecstacy-ridden circuit party boys traipsed and gallivanted, sashayed and swayed hither and yon was a strange experience.  Who knew that twinky boys were so attracted to big daddy bears?  I got so many hugs and smiles that the hours flew by.

When the party finally wound down, I crashed at Pete’s place at around 4am.  Woke up at 9:30, showered and dressed, wrote Pete a cute little thank you note, and drove back down to San Francisco, stopping at a Denny’s for a veggie omelet and to fuel the car in Petaluma.

Later that night, Will invited me to dine with him and Bruin at their place.  Will had just purchased a new Indian cookbook and he wanted to try out one of the dishes, and would I come and be unafraid at the result?  The vindaloo turned out really delicious!  Later, we watched an old Eddie Izzard concert and laughed until it was time to catch the bus back home.  I was really wiped out from the late night and lack of nap.

But it was a really good weekend!  Hooray!

Miscommunication Abounds

Miscommunication Abounds

A friend with whom I have done the occasional massage trade had scheduled the second half of a trade we did for yesterday afternoon.  What I didn’t know is that he asked me to come to his place of work to deliver the service.  Well, I don’t do outcalls, as he well knew, so I’m not sure why he asked.

Anyway, I didn’t notice that he asked me that in the comments of the appointment request, so when I was waiting at my office for him to show up, and he didn’t show up, I sent him a text message asking him if he was ok.  He phoned me right back, and was mad at me that I wasn’t at his place.

I must be more clear on these sorts of things.   Maybe I’ve become spoiled by my fabulous table?  I don’t want to expend the extra energy that working on a flat stationary table requires anymore.

But that brings me to next point.  I have the opportunity to work on some clients in Sacramento once or twice a month if I can find a location.  Ironically, it would be working on a normal (flat, stationary) table.  But the profit would outweigh the cost, and I’d gain some of my clients back from Sacramento that I lost when I moved to San Francisco six years ago.

Weekend Insanity, or Trash Film Orgy

Client on Saturday, then my friend, Steve Huggins, picked me up and off we went to Sacramento for opening night of the 9th season of the Trash Film Orgy!

The House OpensIMG_4858IMG_4856IMG_4860The show was fun, and the crowd was enthusiastic.

We did end up getting a room because my “cousin,” Robin Braun, works for a large hotel chain and hooked us up with an employee rate, so that was happy.

But the morning came too early, and we got off to a very late start, and I had to cancel my Stairway Walk.  Sadly, three people ended up showing up after I sent out the cancellation message.  I have to make that up to them.

But it’s back to work!

Sundae on the Wharf with Will

Sundae on the Wharf with Will

My friend, Will, and I decided that we should go hang out and have ice cream down at Ghirardelli Square. Hot fudge sundaes, fun conversation, then we wandered around looking at the tourists and taking in the view. I had to get to my office for my work day, so we decided to ride the cable car over the hill. As it was such a perfect day, we didn’t mind waiting in line with the other folks who were also there to ride the rails.

Today, I have a client, then a photographer is coming over to take pictures of me and my fabulous massage table!

Wow, I was watching my friend, Bobaloo, on the premiere episode of season two of I Survived a Japanese Game Show, and I almost wet myself when I saw that Bobaloo was wearing a Paul Brown Massage Therapy t-shirt when the game’s host burst into his apartment to carry him away to Japan!  Thanks for wearing my shirt, Bob!

If someone could get a screen cap of that for me, I would be really giggly with excitement!

Ghost In The Lava Light

I have a lava-light lightning bolt lamp on my computer desk, and I turn it on at night when I’m sitting here in my room.  It’s random blue glow is soothing and provides just enough light.

Did part one of  a trade with my acupuncturist yesterday – she’ll work on me next week.  After that, I went and saw the new Star Trek movie with Jason.  It’s a new imagining of their origins, and it works.  I love Zachary Quinto (Sylar from “Heroes”) as Spock, and the rest of the cast is very good, too.  Lots of spicy action and lurid danger to keep things moving along and great visuals and sound to immerse one in the experience.  Recommended.

After that, I had my evening client, and came home to have supper.   Does anyone else have one of these?  It’s a fifteen foot long electrical cord with a pass-through plug on one end and a switch on the other.  It’s essentially a remote control switch for a lamp or other electrical applicance.  I had forgotten I had one until I was looking at my bookshelf last night and saw it.  Suddenly, I can control one of my floor lamps in my bedroom while I’m 8 feet off the ground in bed.  Hooray for reading in bed again!

This morning I headed down to the Apple store on Stockton at Ellis downtown to have them look at my phone.  The volume rocker switch came off and I wanted to see how much it would cost to repair.  Turns out that my one-year warranty is still in effect and they just gave me a new phone on the spot.  While I was sitting there, the iPhone Genius noticed that the rubber on one of my earbuds is coming detached, and he said, “while you’re here, let me exchange those for you, too.”  So it’s suddenly like having a brand new phone again!  That’s the kind of customer service experience I like!

Here Comes The Rain Again

It was time for a haircut, so I got out the clippers and buzzed my hair down, then off to work. On the bus ride downtown, I was trying to remember if I had left the blinds open on my south-facing windows, which would have been quite unmoist. Fortunately, I had kept them closed when I left on Friday morning, so the room was still fairly cool. I got the cross breeze going, table dressed and plants watered, then sat down to wait for my first client.

He was 10 minutes late, but we had a very good session. I had 30 minutes before my next client, so I got the room ready again, did some stretching, and continued my re-reading of “The Educated Heart” by Nina McIntosh, a book on ethics for bodyworkers. I think it’s important to remind oneself of how to maintain professionalism and the therapeutic relationship from time to time.

Second client arrived and we got to work. Two hours later, he was wrung out like a limp dishrag, and I was hungry, so I walked over to Little Delhi at Eddy and Mason for some prawn biryani and vegetable korma and a sweet lassi.

Hopped on the bus and came home, then got on the sofa and continued my umpteenth read through of The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. Book Twelve (“The Gathering Storm”) is slated to come out in the fourth quarter of the year, and as is my habit, I do a complete re-read in anticipation. I have been a reader of this series since the late 1980s when the first book came out. Robert Jordan died in 2007, and his wife selected Brandon Sanderson to finish the series. The work proved to be huge, so they split it off into three volumes, to come out in 2009, 2010, and 2011. Even Jordan before his death thought that Tor would have to invent a new method for binding this last volume. The running joke over the life of the series has been that he’d be able to finish the series with “three more books.” I’m glad that that joke is proving to be true.

Things Are Looking Up!

I went on an interview with a potential long-term client who’s looking for a massage every other week.  And, score!  I start next Tuesday!

Oh, yeah, and I’m going to Smokeout this weekend in Vegas.

Answers, Answers – Question 3

Is there a specific body part you really enjoy working on, and why?

Hmm, this is a good question.

I like working on different parts for different reasons.  I like working on people’s hands and forearms,  because most massage therapists only give a cursory treatment to them.  The tension we hold in our hands and forearms commonly works its way up into the shoulders and neck and chest, because of the way our fascia connects them together.

Another area I enjoy working is in the hips.  They are central to achieving good posture and balance and the deepest relaxation in the body, because they connect to every other part of the body: the head via the erector spinae group, the arms via the latissimus dorsi, the abdomen and chest via the quadratus lumborum and rectus abdominus, etc, and the legs, of course.

The shoulders fascinate me, especially the scapulae and the 15 muscles that attach to them. From memory: supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis, teres minor, teres major, trapezius, serrator anterior, levator scapula, rhomboid major, rhomboid minor, pectoralis minor, omohyoid, bicep brachii, triceps, and corocobrachialis.  All that muscle allows each scapula to move in amazing ways, but the complexity also makes them vulnerable.  Deciphering the interaction of shoulder issues always intrigues me.

Really, though, my favorite part of the body is the part I am working on at the time I am working on it.

I’m answering questions here.
