I dropped off the Zipcar from Saturday’s trek to Sacramento to work on some massage clients and work on the set of Planet of the Vampire Women this morning, then hopped on the 22-Fillmore to Fillmore and Sutter, where I caught the 3-Jackson to Broderick, and walked from there to Pacific Avenue and Lyon Street for the start of today’s walk.
Mike, Dave, Erez, Dewey, and Malcolm join in for the Stairway Walk. Starting at Pacific Avenue and Lyon Street right on the border between Pacific Heights and the Presidio, we wandered down the Louis Upton-designed 1916 Lyon Street Steps, past all the lovely houses, eventually coming to the Ojo de Agua de Figueroa, a former watering hole located at Lyon and Green for the Spanish Army’s horses at the Presidio back in the 18 and 19th centuries that is the site of two huge lovely redwoods and other plantings.
Continuing to the Palace of Fine Arts, we wandered among the columns of this remnant of the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition.
On into the Marina, around curving streets until we came to Mallorca and Chestnut. Dewey and Malcolm had to abandon us at this point, but we had lots of fun with them anyway.
Once on Chestnut, we started looking for a lunch place, and ended up having Mediterranean food. It was Dave and Erez’ anniversary, though, and they wanted to go do some anniversary stuff, so after lunch we bid them farewell, and Mike and I went to get some froyo at tuttimelon and finished the walk.
Back up Broderick’s seven steep blocks to Pacific Avenue was a real challenge, but we met it bravely, and our reward was the wonderful view north, seeing the Palace of Fine Arts again as the fog was rolling in.
Mike gave me a lift home, and I had a much-deserved nap!
