Ca(Bear)et

What do “I’m Beginning to See the Light,” “Miss Otis Regrets,” “Love for Sale,” and “Begin the Beguine” all have in common?

Well, the first was written by Ellington, and the other three by Porter, but as I was sitting listening to the gifted Tommi Rose sing at Wednesday night’s performance, I realized that I had unconsciously ordered these songs in such a way as to tell a story of love found, lost and avenged, fallen off the deep end, and fondly remembered. So, I relaxed a bit about what to say to the audience before and between songs.

Of course, staring out into the audience of 50 or so patrons, many of whom I knew fairly well, after having not sung in public like this in several years, didn’t help me remember the opening note to the first song, and I floundered about like a wounded moose on-stage until I suddenly caught the melody again, and my voice came back strong and clear. I recovered that song, and went into the next three songs with more confidence, and ended Begin the Beguine with a long sustained note that lasted a heck of a lot longer than I thought I could hold.

The evening’s entertainment consisted of Carla Ozard, a professional theater and cabaret singer, Tommi Rose, who was the Mistress of Ceremonies at the famous Finnoccio’s club in North Beach for 15 years or so, Donna Sachet, who doesn’t need much of an introduction, me, and magician Scott Alcalay, who’s on LJ as scottasf, I think. And the headliner, the dance/hiNRG diva recording artist Vicki Shepard, who did a lovely jazz set for us.

Ann Walker, who plays Lavonda Dupree on Logo TV’s hit series Sordid Lives, was our host for the evening, and she was as charming and funny as you’d expect of someone who’s been in show business for a long time. I fell in love with her instantly! And for some strange reason, she was enjoying my company as well, so we chatted about politics quite a bit, and other things. I don’t really know much about the TV show she’s on, but apparently everyone else in the place did, as people kept coming up to her and gushing about it. I know the movie upon which the show is based, though, so I’m not a complete moron.

After the show, a bunch of us headed across the street to Martuni’s and sang a few more songs and had, of course, martinis. But we were hungry, so Tommi, Matt Consola, Ann, and I piled into Tommi’s car and headed up to Sparky’s, where we had a late supper. Finally, though, it was time to go home, so Tommi gave Matt and I a ride home, and I assume dropped Ms. Walker off at her hotel.

So, despite the embarrassing start, a lovely evening!

Hairrison Street Fair

The Team Bear Massage and Cuddle Tent got off to a rocky start: there was no tent in which to massage and cuddle! When I arrived at 09:30, the fair was in a state of disarray, with many tents still not erected. Apparently, the tent vendor had been on an all-night meth binge, and he showed up with not enough tent equipment, so many of the tents were not assembled or erected, including the cuddle tent.

I was dreading what to tell all of my volunteer MTs who had agreed to work for me for this event. They started to arrive one by orne, and I briefed them as to the situation. Fortunately, they all took it with good grace, and we hung out in the shade at the Team Bear Beer Booth while we waiting to see whether we’d be working or scrubbing the event. I wasn’t going to let them work in the full sun all day, certainly; that’s just heat stroke waiting to happen.

But, right around noon, I was informed that some tents were on their way, and we had two 10×10 shade tents provided to us, which we quickly assembled and set up on the sidewalk across 12th street from the Eagle Tavern. It turned out to be a favorable location for us, as there was plenty of foot traffic, but not too much.

The cuddle tent portion of the event, though, was a bust – the promised bean bag chairs did not materialize, and with the tents half the size of what we were originally told, we went with all massage. It didn’t matter, though, as we had a great time.

I was the barker for the tent, calling out in my stage voice, “GET YER RUB-ON! TEAM BEAR MASSAGE TENT! MASSAGE FOR CHARITY!” I know I could be heard from far away because heads would turn whenever I called out, which was about once a minute or so. Tons of people came up to me and the tent during the course of the day, and I collected the donations and assigned the client to the MTs. I didn’t do any massage myself all day, but was on my feet all day in the sun.

We collected over 700 dollars for Team Bear, though, so it was a great day in that department.

After the fair, Kenn gave Bjørn and I a ride home, and we delivered Paul’s table back up to Twin Peaks where he lives.

Thank you, Bjørn, Peter, Kenn, Charlie, Paul, and Shane for all your hard work today! I and Team Bear really appreciate it! And thank you to all you wonderful LJers and others who stopped by and donated! You have gotten Team Bear’s fundraising season for ALC8 off to a rousing start!

Team Bear Massage and Cuddle Tent

Tomorrow all day at the Hairrison Street Fair, I will be running the Team Bear Massage and Cuddle Tent. We’re going to have 6 or 7 Massage Therapists for your relaxing pleasure, and big bean bag chairs scattered around the room for your cuddling delight!

The Cuddle Tent will be situated in the Team Bear Community Zone, near the 12th and Folsom entrance to the fair! The fair runs from 11am to 6pm, so be sure to put on a bit of sunscreen and bring a light jacket or sweater for the late afternoon!

http://hairrison.org/ has more details about the fair.

A Day of Silence

My table will arrive in Oakland on Friday, and then sometime early next week, it will be in my office! Hooray!

I’m performing TONIGHT at OCTAVIA LOUNGE for CA(BEAR)ET. The dinner show starts at 7pm – hosted by ANN WALKER (LAVONDA DUPREE of LOGO TV’S SORDID LIVES), and featuring live performance by DONNA SACHET, TOMMI ROSE, magician SCOTT ALCALAY, and surprise guests (I’m thinking that’s me).

Table Madness and Traffic Insanity

What a strange day. It seemed to start out well, with a telephone message from the table manufacturer saying the table was ready to ship, and they they just needed to get the remaining balance on the table. This is very exciting, as I am thrilled and my mind has been racing with possibilities about this table and what I am going to be able to do with it.

So, my noon client arrived and we were working on opening up his iliopsoas (hip flexor) muscles to relieve some of his back pain. I had gone deep into his abdomen to release the psoas on both sides. Then I had him sit on the edge of my table, and was doing a tense and relax stretch on him. The first one went well, but when I started to do the second hip, one of the diagonal support struts on my table snapped, collapsing the table. Thankfully, my client was only startled, but since the table was set very low to the ground, the client was not hurt. We finished the session on the massage chair, and then did some floor work in the Thai style.

What a mortifying thing to have happen, but also what weird timing. For some time now, [info]mamoosh had asked me if I wanted his old table to have as a spare. And at my last dentist visit, he was there and again offered the table – he wanted to help clear some space in his garage. So I accepted the offer, and called him up to explain what had happened.

He was hosting a birthday dinner for [info]arthole , but when I explained the urgency, he agreed to let me come by and pick it up, so I dashed off in a zipcar to Concord to pick it up.

Dashed being a generous word for what actually did happen – leaving San Francisco at the height of rush hour traffic. Sweet Merciful Pie! Fortunately, though, the Democratic National Convention was also just starting up, and I listened to all the speeches on NPR, so I had something to occupy my mind from wanting to slit my wrists at the foolishness of trying to drive over to the East Bay.

Fortunately, the iPhone’s GPS works just fine, and I arrived with nary a hitch. John answered the door, and led me to the garage. Wow, it’s as wide as my current table, but not as long, but that’s ok. Matthew came out a few moments later and we chatted a bit, but they were wanting to finish preparing for their dinner, so I loaded the table into the trunk of the car, thanked them, and got back on the road.

Of course, I forgot that you have to have cash to get back across the bay bridge, so I ended up looking for an ATM to get some cash. I don’t know why exactly, but I ended up in East Oakland near Fruitvale BART, and drove back up 880 to the Bay Bridge.

Finally, though, I got across the bridge, and dropped the table off, returned the zipcar, and went to the Lone Star to pass out Bear Week bear tags. But weirdly, no one came by to pick one up! This is weird, because I spent Saturday and Sunday passing them out to those who purchased them. Well, that’s not for me to worry about any longer, as I get to give the tags back to Pete today.

Today, I called the table manufacturer and they told me they shipped the table yesterday even though they hadn’t run my card yet. I let them know that the money was sitting in the account for them to debit it on my business card. Very exciting! I have the shipping information and will call the company up today to get an estimated arrival date and arrange for delivery. The new table weighs around 200 pounds and comes in a big wooden crate, so I have to arrange with the building management to have to big sliding door on O’Farrell Street opened when the truck arrives.

I can’t wait!

The Table Is Ready!

So excited! I received the telephone call from the table manufacturer today – the table is constructed and ready to ship! In around 7 days, I’ll be having my brand spanking new Comfort Craft Model 800 table! I’m so completely and utterly moistened by this experience! Like a damp rag I am!
