I remember when Benazir Bhutto was first elected to the Prime Ministership in Pakistan, and remember thinking what a cool name she had – how alliterative and exotic it sounded. And so charismatic and beautiful a woman she was. Even then I knew just how extraordinary the election of a woman to that post in Pakistan was.
In all of the television appearances I ever saw of her, one thing always came through – a powerful determination and compassion for the people of her homeland to make things better for them.
I feel a profound sadness for the loss of this amazing woman, and compassion for the Pakistani people who are now going through even more trying times at this loss.
Meanwhile, the New York Times has an audio-visual presentation of the last moments of her life, in photographs and narration by the photographer.

She had an orchid named after her, which seems fitting somehow.
