I usually take the same walking route to and from Civic Center BART:
East on Fell,
North on Octavia,
East on Hayes,
North on Gough,
East on Grove to the station.
I know I could just walk to Laguna to Grove to the station but that would be boring. My route passes me by the park on Octavia, where I’ll often see strange and wondrous sights. Sometimes, I’ll walk other routes, too. I might have to go to the Walgreen’s, for instance, or one of the shops on Hayes Street.
This other night, I was in Walgreen’s picking up a couple of things and I saw this hot rough trade flirting with the nubile young cashier, and she was lapping up the attention. Meanwhile, a bleach blonde with inch long black roots, a faux-fur trimmed jacket, a peasant skirt and horizontally striped tights entered the place, startling the rough trade. Uh-oh, I thought to myself, she’s his old lady and doesn’t look happy. I made my purchases as she was leaving the store, and I started walking up the street behind her. For some reason I can’t fathom, when I caught up to her, I asked her if she had seen the new candy store that recently opened on Octavia parallel to the park.
She hadn’t, but then she asked me what my favorite candy was. “Jolly Rancher Apple,” I told her, “Yours?”
We had this fun conversation about candy as we walked up the street. I had this feeling she really wanted to say something more, but she never did. When we inevitably parted company, she asked me to make sure I bought something fun at that new candy store.
