Shiatsu 4

Monday’s class was putting together the entire prone sequence and moving on to the face work. I partnered with a woman who’s touch was really, really light. And yet, with that, the work was nice. In return, I worked on her with feather-light touch and she was very happy. Shiatsu is a system of manipulating the body’s energy through specific ritualized touch along the energy pathways that move over and through the body, sort of like a highway.

The weird thing is that while I am very skeptical about this work in my head, I have had experiences that I do not really know how to put into an empirical context. Scientific experimentation done on work based on Traditional Chinese Medicine often returns negative results, or widely divergent results, especially as it relates to meridians - like accupuncture and accupressure massage. Yet, I can “feel” “energy” moving around my clients and my own body. Take, for instance, the chi pat. This is a shiatsu stroke that is used after the work on the lower back. You place one hand on the sacrum, and with the free hand, you strike the first hand in the direction of the feet. It’s not a hard stroke, but the sensation of feeling waves or clouds of energy moving down the legs to the feet in amazing. In the sequence we are being taught, we move on to the legs next, and if you’ve done the back well, the legs are already receptive to the work, and it’s a simple work.

I rode BART home, anticipating receiving a nice massage from a guy I am trading with. I got some supper, walked home and showered, then walked over to his place. It was a really nice experience, and I’ll be reciprocating with him this coming Monday.

Today, the return of the teaching clinic at school. UGH.

Saturday morning, after my client left, I hustled on down to Church and Market, to meet with darkphuqueEd (darkphuque) and have lunch. We ended up dining at Woodhouse’s Seafood, a newish place that replaced the old World Sausage there on Market between 14th and Church. I had the do-it-yourself lemonade, a side salad, and their huge plate of clams. The clams were really incredible, with a crispy batter shell, and enormous clams, which had that wonderful fresh taste of the sea. The lemonade was served in three parts: a glass with crushed ice and fresh lemon juice, a carafe of cold water, and a bottle of cane juice, which was so sweet that sugar crystals were forming along the lip of the bottle’s mouth, and down in the bottom of the bottle. I mixed the cane juice with the lemon juice, and then added the water to find the perfect mix of tart and sweet. So yummy! Thanks, Ed, for suggesting that wonderful place to eat!

Cute Customer Service!

After lunch, I ambled down to the Castro BearBears, had a coffee, and hung out in the warm afternoon sun. That’s something I haven’t had much time to do for the past five months since I’ve been back in school, and I relished just sitting doing absolutely nothing. Yet, there weren’t any of the familiar faces that normally hang out there, and I grew restless, so when Cody and Jack came by putting up a flyer for the beer bust that Cody, Mr. Lone Star Cub 2006/7, is hosting to benefit PAWS, I decided to walk around with them while they posted their bills. We ended up parting company at an Enhydra-less Sorrento Sun Center, as they had to finish their errands, and I had to go back home for a nap.

The nap was useful, and my buddy, Kevin <bear411 user=”bayosito”>, and I met up later at the Lone Star, where we had a couple of beers, and I was flirted on by a few guys. Many people didn’t recognize me with my current facial hair configuration, especially the short, brush mustache; some actually did double-takes. My beard is growing back in nicely, though, and I’ll be fully bearded again in another week or so. He had a difficult time getting a taxi to take him back to Oakland.

Sunday, I had a client in the morning, then lazed about the house for a few hours, until I headed off to the market to pick up the stuff for that night’s dinner. I steamed a spaghetti squash, then mixed it with some melted butter and minced garlic, topped it with parmesan cheese and broiled it. I sliced some french bread vine-ripened tomatoes, and mozarella cheese, put the tomato on the bread, the cheese on the tomato, and popped that into the broiler, and a romaine salad with sweet cherry tomatoes and avocado, a little sesame oil. albadgerAlbadger brought an apple pie and a pumpkin pie for dessert. It was a nice way to end a wonderful weekend.
