So, I ripped my room apart because I was tired of not feeling like I had any space to move around. I put both the bed and the computer desk on the same wall as the window, gave my TV and that little oak table away on Freecycle, took the oak 80s-era computer desk that held the TV, DVD and VCR down to the garage (I’ll be dusting it off and posting a pic of it – it’s actually pretty cool.) and moved some stuff out of the closets to try to open it up more. Now I have this big pile of laundry to go through, and then I’m done.
Yesterday we started our first of six Sports Massage classes. We focused on pre-event work, which is vastly different than anything I’ve done before. The idea is that we don’t want to do deep work that will bring a big change to the muscle tissue like MFT or other Deep modalitites would do, and we definitely don’t want to change their proprioception – their sense of where their body is in space, as that could throw their game off. Instead, we want to create, as the instructor said, “durable hyperemia.” So the technique involves very fast, rhythmic compression, palmar friction, rocking and shaking, and passive joint mobilization. One of the students works in a restaurant and hires the DJs that provide music services there, and he had these CDs of Chicago House music that was really amazing for the work. Fast, uptempo, but not blaring, we did 40 minutes of this work, and by the time we were done, the room was as hot as an oven – it was like being at a dance! In this work, 10-15 minutes is the optimal amount of time – more than that and you change the tissue too much. But what a workout!
Today I’m back to the San Francisco Mime Troupe for my externship. Then a client tonight.
