Popular, I know about popular

by Paul Brown on 20 June 2006

So, I wonder, do the physically attractive have an easier time building social networks than the less physically attractive? I mean attractive in the context of the bear community, with its emphasis on secondary male sexual characteristics as a sign of beauty.

Do you think that if someone is considered to be more attractive that they have entreé to social circles that might otherwise be less available to less attractive members of the community? Or do you think it’s all about social graces and manners, charisma, if you will? Or is there economic class involved? Racial divisions, physical handicaps; do these play any role in what makes a person popular? What about celebrity?

And what do I mean by popular anyway? Anthony Berno makes a good point when he says “well-connected” and “influential” as a benchmark for measuring the appearance of popularity.

So, in other words, how does one gain a foothold into the realms of the socially elite in the bear community?
