Juana Davis, or How I Learned to Go with the Flow

by Paul Brown on 30 May 2006

Friday: I did a massage, then headed to the Metreon with the movie bears to see X-Men 3. After the movie, bigjohnsfBig John in SF (bigjohnsf), albadgerAlbadger, hardybearPeter (hardybear), and I went to Mel’s Drive-In on Mission for a late supper. Riding the 71-Noriega home, I think my phone fell out of my pocket, but I didn’t realize it at the time.

The Stolen Child : A Novel

Saturday: another massge client, then I attended my first The 15 Association party. This is part of my developing interest in dominance and submission eroticism. On my walk over to the party, I realized that I didn’t have my phone on me and debated walking back to fetch it, but figured it’d be there when I got home, and continued to the party. I went feeling confident and figured I’d probably have a good time, but instead the group pretty much ignored me and I left after two hours, somewhat discouraged. As I was leaving, two guys were trying to get in, but the cashier had already been closed, and they were turned away. As it happened, it was they guy who had been renting part of the garage here at UGH as a play space, so he offered me a lift when I told him that I was going to walk over to the Lone Star.

At Folsom and 10th he dropped me off, and him and his buddy trundled on over to the Hole in the Wall while I walked to Lone Star. I had arranged to meet burlyinthebayDave (burlyinthebay) there that night after the party, and gave him a place to crash out that night. He was up here moving his stuff down to Los Angeles. We had a beer, then walked to the Burger King at 9th and Howard where I had a small snack, hailing a cab when we were done there.

Sunday: Dave and I awoke and after some quick message checking, walked to J’s Pots of Soul on Octavia at page for breakfast. This is where it gets weird. I borrowed John’s van to drive Dave to get his U-Haul truck, but there was some confusion about where it was, and no one at U-Haul could give him a straight answer. We ended up driving to San Bruno where they said a truck was waiting, but then we were told subsequently that we had to go to San Mateo. He was becoming very frustrated, as you can imagine, as was I, because I had a massage appointment at 13:00, and time was rapidly approaching. Eventually it all got straightened out, and I made it back with 30 minutes to spare, but it reminds me that I probably won’t use that company again for my moving needs.

Massage completed, I went about trying to find out how to get to that party over in Pleasant Hill, but couldn’t find the directions in the guy’s LJ. He made the invitation announcement a public post, but the directions a friends-only post, I found out later, and no way of getting in touch except via LJ comments, which seem unreliable, so I was stuck without a particular plan of action.

I ended up reading a book that had arrived from Amazon on Saturday, The Stolen Child by Keith Donahue. What a fun book. It’s Donahue’s first novel, but it’s very well-written, excellent story-telling, with good pacing. He uses alternating chapters to tell the points of view of the two main characters, a changeling and the child the changeling replaced. It’s set in twentieth century America, and his use of the mundane just makes the magical aspect of it seem that much more compelling and real. A good book, and well worth reading. After that, I just went to bed.

Monday: I spent Monday doing laundry and looking for my phone. OK, I spent Sunday looking for my phone, too, but Monday I was much more concerned for it, especially with rent coming due and school about to start. An added expense that I don’t need right now, yet I can ill-afford to be without a phone. My business is highly telephone-dependent. I have been checking my messages, but it’s just not the same as being able to speak directly to potential clients.

The abbreviated Sunday Dinner gang, which ended up being the same gang that attended Mel’s Drive-In on Friday after the movie, had supper then watched the two most recent episodes of Doctor Who – the second part of the cybermen episode, and the one from this past Saturday about The Wire. Good stuff, and the series is really putting out some wonderful work.

No luck in finding the phone, so today, I bought a new phone which will be shipped overnight to me, and I think I get to keep my current number – hooray!
