Last night’s SFMovieBears gathering of 167 bears to see the latest in the 20th Century Fox’s and Marvel Entertainment’s mutant franchise was quite an event. I was truly amazed at how we filled more than half of the seats in the theater auditorium at AMC’s Metreon. So many hot men in attendance. Thanks,
Dave (dhbearguy) for yet another fun-filled event!
The movie itself, while not quite as good as the second installment, nevertheless moved along with a largely full head of steam, with plenty of action, although the plot was a little weak, yet the character development was nice. The groan elicited from Professor X’s explanation of how Jean Grey was able to survive “She must have wrapped herself in a telekinetic force field.” was funny, especially as the lesbian girls sitting behind me’s running commentary noted (“what does that mean?”).
The various mutant powers were pretty skillfully staged, with good CGI and other special effects. The scenes with Juggernaut were especially funny, although they don’t touch on the fact that he is Professor X’s half-brother. But he was never the sharpest tool in the shed, and the writers were careful to portray that clod-headedness well.
I’m happy with how the writers decided to handle the Jean Grey/Phoenix plot point; removing the extra-terrestrial aspect of the duality of her personality was much more humanizing and believable. The Rogue subplot is set up for a nice surprise in the next movie – hopefully they will get into the whole Rogue/Ms. Marvel incident, as Rogue is one of my favorite characters from the book. The battle between Iceman and Pyro was good if a bit predictible, and sets up more contention between them.
The (not-so) surprising scene right at the end, and the easter egg scene (after the credits) are both important to the next film, so make sure you stick around to after the (long) credits, or you’ll be disappointed.
Over all the movie is a good entertainment value, and I am thinking I may see it again soon.
