Jeff’s Visit, day six

by Paul Brown on 29 January 2005

Well, got out of class early, and was a bit peckish, so I gathered up and picked Jeff up at his class location, then headed over to Wing Lee Bakery for some dim sum. On the way there, we had to pass UGH, where the roofers were sitting on the stoop, apparently waiting for someone to let them in. I had Dominik hop out of the van and open the door for them. None of us expected that they were going to be there, since they had come earlier in the morning and told us that with the rain, they’d be unable to work that day. A couple hours later, the sunshine inspired them to finish the job. That was a good thing.

After letting them in, we continued down to Clement and 6th for lunch, picking up a feast of dim sum for the three of us, and heading to Baker Beach to eat. The breeze was up a bit for eating on the beach, so we all sat in the van and devoured the dim sum, chatting about this and that. That enormous quantity of food was had for about $16 – Wing Lee is both delicious and inexpensive, a boon to people on a budget!

Back at the house, I found supervising the roofers, which I figured would happen while we were out. David had gone out on a walk, figuring that since they had come and pronounced the weather too wet to work, it would be fine. Well, they finished up right around 17:30 and packed up their stuff and headed out.

The sore throat I’ve been experiencing has sapped some energy from me, so I napped a bit, then woke to find Dominik getting ready to go out to see an art show at The Trap. I would have gone, but didn’t have the energy. But later, I felt better enough to go with Jeff to the Lone Star, where we met up with and Timzilla, his cohort. Jeff met a friend he hadn’t seen in years, and I just stood there listening, conserving my energy. After a while, Jeff, Jeff, Tim and I headed over to the Loading Dock to see what was up with that. Jeff and I had donned our bar vests, and I was in my Red Wings, and Jeff Glover was in his full-on regalia, so we fit right in, even though it was Rubber Night at the LD. There were enough men in leather to not feel out of place.

The crowd there was smallish, though, and after standing up in the mezzanine for a while, watching Jeff and Jeff make out on the main floor, I was losing my battle with hunger. The room became incredibly cold, and I was shivering, upstairs though I was. My Jeff came upstairs to see how I was doing, and I told him that I was cold and hungry, so we four walked over to the King Diner at 10th and Mission, where I had two grilled cheese and bacon sandwiches and a vanilla milkshake. My Jeff had a hamburger and fries, Jeff Glover had the chili-fries, and I think Timzilla did, too. The chili looked like Alpo, despite its “Homemade” moniker. The bread on my sandwiches was plain white bread, but the sandwiches were tasty anyway. The shake was yummy, if a bit thin. It was fun sitting there talking more, and I was feeling better after getting some food in my tummy.

Finally, we all hugged our goodbyes, and I drove Jeff home, where I promptly fell into bed.
