Damnable Neuters! or “There’s something wrong with your vagina!”

by Paul Brown on 25 September 2004

, , , , and I somehow all collided at the Emeryville Public Market’s food court last night – well, ok the first three planned on being there, and the latter of us also planned on being there. So when I saw Paul and Richard right after I placed my order of General Mo’s Chicken at the Chinese Deep Fry place, I knew that we all just had to join up when we all went to see John Water’s A Dirty Shame at the UA Emery Bay.

His portrayal of the Bear family, complete with a “Mama Bear,” his husbear, “Papa Bear,” and their cub, “Baby Bear,” is pure genius – their over-the-top growls and woofs and constant cuddling and togetherness rang as ridiculously true because of precisely how over-the-top it was. I’m still giggling about it.

I don’t want to give the film away, but there are several “ew” moments, and the way the film builds to its climax, and the climax itself, is something that every other film maker will envy.

Anyway, the consensus from us six was that this movie ranks right up there with some of his best work – in the lower portion of the first tier, to be sure, but still in the first tier.

I would go see this movie again, and probably will.
